Hudson Highlights & We Decided Our Route!

Hi ,

Welcome to Scho & Jo’s 74th Sunday Summary. This edition of the Sunday Summary was written aboard PIVOT in Scotia, New York along the Erie Canal!!

    Last Week.

We cruised north to Kingston, Athens, Hudson, Albany, Troy, and Waterford. The highlights of our week included walking around the State Capital of New York, Albany, and eating some delicious ramen, going to the best farmer’s market we’ve ever been to in Troy, eating some of the best ice cream we’ve ever had for dinner and then breakfast the next morning (because we’re adults), and beginning the Erie Canal!

Today we cruised from Waterford, which is the branch off the Hudson River between the Champlain Canal (north) and the Erie Canal (west), to Scotia. This part of the Erie Canal contains 5 locks known as the

    Flight of Five

    or the

    Waterford Flight

. This set of five locks goes up a total of 169 feet in less than two miles, making it the greatest elevation in the shortest distance for a lock in the world. It we were being hit with a heat wave and temperatures over 90 degrees with these five BIG locks one after another! It was a crazy day but we were happy to have it end on a positive note. Once we arrived in Scotia, we heard a concert playing in the nearby park so we walked over and enjoyed the music!

    This Week.

This week we’re traveling along half the Erie Canal, making our way up many, many locks, to Oswego! We made the really, really tough decision to bypass the Champlain Canal, Montreal, the Rideau Canal, and the Western half of the Erie Canal. Decisions had to be made and we tried to make the best one for us. Who knows, maybe we’ll be back one day to do the canals and routes we didn’t do. Only time will tell!

Last week we said that you could expect 3 new videos from us this week, and will full intention we meant that. Unfortunately, we’ve been waiting for a music copyright claim to be released since Friday morning. Hopefully it will be released soon and you can enjoy 3 videos this upcoming week!

     Extra.

While we were in the Florida Keys this winter, we invited our friends Alicia and Nate from The Passport Couple onboard with us for 3 weeks! We all had a ton of work to do, but in this video they share a bit of the behind the scenes. See a different side of Pivot and the crew here:

     Great Loop Recommendations.

We are looking for recommendations for destinations and spots along our Great Loop to go see, visit, and enjoy. It's been a real challenge for us to keep track and stay organized with the many wonderful recommendations we've received thus far. So we've created a Google Form to help us stay organized. Thank you to everyone sending us recommendations so far! We really appreciate it.

     Gratitudes.

We’re grateful to have had our first successful day through the New York Canal System! I don’t think either of us was mentally prepared for what we were about to tackle today, but we did it with only a few hiccups that were out of our control. We had traveled through locks before but not nearly at this scale, so there was some intimidation going into today’s endeavor. We’re super excited for the adventure ahead of us with a lot more locks in our future!

    Peace and love,Jenn + Elliot
